HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR TATTOO
Proper tattoo aftercare is crucial to ensure your tattoo heals correctly and retains its vibrant, detailed appearance. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you care for your new tattoo:

ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR HEALING YOUR NEW INK
HEAL YOUR INK WITH LOVE
Keep the Bandage On
-
Initial Care: Your tattoo artist will cover your new tattoo with a bandage or plastic wrap to protect it from dirt, bacteria, and irritation. Leave this bandage on for the time recommended by your artist (usually 2-4 hours).
-
Avoid removing it too early to give the tattoo a chance to start healing in a sterile environment
Wash the Tattoo Gently
-
After removing the bandage, gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Avoid scrubbing it—just use your fingers to clean the surface.
-
Pat it dry with a clean, soft towel or allow it to air dry.
Apply a Thin Layer of Aftercare Ointment
-
First few days: Apply a thin layer of ointment (such as Aquaphor or a tattoo-specific aftercare product) for the first 3-4 days.
-
Switch to lotion: After the initial period, switch to a fragrance-free moisturizing lotion to keep the skin hydrated.
Avoid Scratching or Picking
-
Itching and flaking: As your tattoo heals, it will itch and may peel, but don’t scratch or pick at the skin. Picking can damage the tattoo and increase the risk of infection.
-
If it’s itching, gently tap or slap the area to relieve the urge.
Keep the Tattoo Moisturized
-
Keeping your tattoo moisturized helps prevent dryness and flaking. Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion throughout the healing process, but avoid over-applying.
Don’t Soak Your Tattoo
-
Avoid swimming, hot tubs, or long baths for at least 2 weeks. Soaking the tattoo in water can cause the ink to fade and may lead to infections.
-
Short showers only: Keep your tattoo out of direct water flow during showers.
Protect from the Sun
-
Sun exposure can cause fading and irritation to your new tattoo. For at least a few months after getting inked, avoid direct sunlight on your tattoo and wear a high SPF sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) if you must go outside.
Avoid Tight Clothing
-
Loose, breathable clothing is best for your new tattoo. Tight clothes can rub against the tattoo, causing irritation or trapping sweat and bacteria against the skin.
Don’t Overdo It
-
Tattoo healing takes time—typically 2-4 weeks for the surface skin and up to 6 months for the deeper layers of skin to fully heal. Avoid strenuous exercise or activities that might cause excessive sweating or friction.
Watch for Signs of Infection
While infections are rare, keep an eye out for any of these signs
-
Excessive redness or swelling
-
Pus or discharge from the tattoo
-
Unusual pain or tenderness
-
Warmth or fever around the tattoo area
If you suspect infection, contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional immediately.
